  Redirecting the Golden Compass

Thanks to Concordia Publishing House, author Scott Stiegemeyer, and editor Paul McCain, we have Questions and Answers about Philip Pullman's The Golden Compass: A Discussion Guide to use when talking about the atheistic propaganda of author Philip Pullman. It comes just in time for the release of The Golden Compass, the new film based on Northern Lights (retitled The Golden Compass in the US), the first book in the trilogy His Dark Materials. CPH made this free guide available in PDF, RTF, DOC, and TXT, so anyone with a browser can easily obtain a copy.

Should you wonder if the Christian Church's response to Pullman's works is warranted, I suggest you read the Urban Legends Reference Page: The Golden Compass, since Snopes.com is hardly a shill for organized religion. Anyone who writes this well wields great influence — anyone who writes this well and holds a position contrary to the Faith poses grave danger to unwary souls.

Thank you! Thank you for sharing this timely information.

Just last night my husband was telling me our 7-year old wants to see this movie. I told him, "absolutely not!"

He hadn't heard anything about it except for the commericals on TV. However, I had just read a book by Jim Ware about it and was getting ready to tell him about it when he told me about our daughter.

Now there's this resource from a Lutheran perspective which I am sure will be better!

Thank you!

I think that as followers of Christ we should engage the culture and be thoughtful in our criticism and not just reactionary. I keep hearing all this talk about banning the movie..I am going to see the movie and we are taking our Middle School kids(those who want to come), and talk afterwards about the worldview issues. Let's have an intellectual and thoughtful discuss about the ideas and not just being afraid of them.

I posted some thoughts about the Golden Compass on my blog here:

Also, ChristianityToday posted a helpful piece by Jeffery Overstreet that give a balanced view and addresses questions and concerns Christians have about the books and movie.

I wonder about this, I really do. It occurs to me that all the discussion on Christian sites simply adds to the hype and will end up with more folk seeing the film, so if we really believed it was dangerous we ought simply to shut up!

My children will no doubt see the film and that is fine. They know where they are in their faith, are intelligent enough to recognise an agenda or bias and can distinguish between the world of film fantasy and the world they inhabit. It's a story. Not all stories tell the truth. Children know that. They didn't believe in aliens just because they saw E.T.

I predict things will be fine.

Why the Aardvark?
My Raison d’être
The aardvark is a "down & dirty" critter that spends its life rooting yucky things out of their dark haunts and feasting on their carcasses. Nuff said?
