O Chuck! O Guido! Oh, My!
A Familiar Name in an Unexpected Place
Regular readers realize that, along with Lutheranism and alliteration, the Aardvark enjoys offbeat cop-type shows along with the bizarre and the fantastic. Among these is Chuck, the lead-off program on NBC's Monday nights.
Imagine our surprise when Mrs. Vark and I heard John Casey (Adam Baldwin) talking about Sarah Walker's (Yvonne Strahovski) con man dad Jack Burton (Gary Cole). Setting the stage, Casey mentioned that Jack was checked in at a hotel under the name "Guido Merkens."
Mrs. V and I immediately clicked on the rather uncommon name. Both recognized the moniker of the founding pastor of the LCMS megachurch Concordia, San Antonio while I also recalled the former football player — cornerback, wide receiver, and utility player for the Saints, the Oilers, and other NFL teams. My question: Was Guido's name plucked out of thin air or was a writer familiar with either Pastor or player Merkens?

So what did you ever find out?! I am a fan of both "Chuck" and the Saints, so I was tickled to death at the mention of Guido Merkens, just out of the blue. My sister used to work for NBC so I asked her to check it out, but I'm still waiting to hear from her...
